I came across this brand and it looks promising. Their goal is to make clothes, in the good ol’ NYC-USA, the tradional way. You can’t beat that.
They want to hearken back to when people bought clothes to last as long as possible and not throw away like they do today. There’s few things more annoying than wearing some cheap piece of clothing and having it fray after one wash, or tear at the seams after a few wears. Kudos this this company. I can only hope it starts a real trend to quality rather than quantity. Time to go back to the old way!!!
Right now, they only make garments like boxers, undershirts, and long johns, but I’m sure there’s a lot more to come. It’s only in a few stores for now, but there’s always online in the mean time. You can also follow them on Twitter (@choctawridgenyc).
From the site:
The inspiration for Choctaw Ridge came from an old underwear box from the 1930s.
To me, the box represented an era when men put considerably more effort into their appearance. Shoes were polished at all times. Shirts and pants were freshly pressed. Every aspect of a wardrobe was considered and cared for, all the way down to the undergarments.
Needless to say, times have changed. Back then, items were of a higher quality, and you bought the best you could afford and seldom more than you needed. Today, it’s all about fast, cheap and disposable.
Choctaw Ridge is a return to how things used to be. From the materials, to the construction, to the packaging, no corner has been cut and no expense has been spared. We believe that our garments are as good, if not better, than those of the past. That’s why we put them in the same box.
Like those men of yesteryear, we understand that less can be more, when less is the best.

I came across this brand, Loggerhead Apparel, via an ad on Facebook of all things. If you don’t know me, I’m all about the “preppy” look. I love Brooks Brothers, J Crew, and Vineyard Vines (#1). If I’m not wearing pastels in the summer, something is wrong.
That being said, this brand seems to fit the bill as far as style. On top of that, you get to do some good…a little for animals and a little for people. A little bit on that…
Their passion and pride for the state of South Carolina, its people and its beauty, its wildlife and its economy, led to Loggerhead Apparel.
The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is an endangered species, and the coast of South Carolina is extremely important to its survival. The textile industry of South Carolina, once thriving, is as endangered as the Loggerhead, and has a huge impact on the economy of our state.
Loggerhead Apparel will provide top-quality, American-grown, American-made clothing at a fair price. Ten percent of the revenue gained from the sale of all Loggerhead Apparel shirts will be donated directly to local causes supporting the conservation and protection of the Loggerhead.
In addition to supporting the Loggerhead, Loggerhead Apparel will also support the local textile industry, because no part of the production process will take place outside of the United States.
So, you’re doing good for turtles and AMERICAN textiles and manufacturing. Sounds good to me. There’s no stores in my area yet, but you can suggest a local location that you think would work here, which I think is really smart. This is definitely a brand to keep an eye on. I look forward to seeing it in my local shop and giving it a try.
I actually enjoy getting dressed “properly” in a suit and tie. It’s so rare. Maybe if it was everyday, I would think a bit differently. Though, when I used to wear suits daily, I really didn’t mind so much. I think it really puts you in the proper, professional mindset. And when going out, I think it makes the night more “legitimate” and perhaps more “real.” I think it says something about the man and the setting, to be sure. One day, I will spring for a custom made suit. Perhaps from these guys.
Cad & the Dandy, a traditional English tailoring house from Savile Row that’s willing to make transatlantic house calls, accepting appointments now.
Once a month, they visit NYC from their perch on the gentleman’s mecca of Savile Row. Rugged twills. Nailhead stripes. The kinds of fabrics for the kinds of suits a member of MI6 might wear. All you have to is set up an appointment (phone or online). They will do a complete, perfect fitting for you.
Once the fitting is taken care of, it’s all about the little details. Which color, fabric, buttons, will it be Machine-stitched or hand-stitched in England? Matching pocket squares or spare pair of trousers. They’ll even sew you a jacket liner from an image of your choosing. Even wedding suits! There’s infinite dandy possibilities here.
Now…don’t ask me about prices…

While I do like a number of brands, like Ralph Lauren, Hilfiger, and J. Crew, I may be the most fond of Vineyard Vines. I just really love the whole “Cape” preppy feel of all the clothes. I mean, whoi doesn’t love seersucker, pastels, and lobster shorts???
The guys that started the company, Ian and Shep, know their roots, love their roots, and stick to the program. I don’ see them coming out with any ripped jeans any time soon. For those seeking a bargain, it seems that they have a couple of outlet stores, one being close to my hometown. Pretty cool, have to check that out. I’m still waiting for them to open one on LI, preferably in Garden City, but we’ll see.
