What Dad Said, What Dad Meant: Encouraging Kindness

I’m not sure how many of you have seen the show Oswald on Nick Jr. (formerly Noggin).  It’s a great show. Very sweet, very kind. Perfect for little ones, as pretty much all of Nick Jr. is. We try to push it on them as much as possible, though the 6 yr old is pretty much moved passed at this point. This is all due to her friends with older siblings…but I digress.

Scenario: So Liam was watching Oswald this morning and Oswalt (blue octopus) is serving his friends Henry (penguin) and Daisy (take a guess) some hot cocoa and peppermint tea. Isn’t that so sweet? It’s great. Well Henry is a bit of a…dandy…and likes things the way he wants them. Henry says he cannot have hot cocoa with anything other than 3 marshmallows, “nothing more, nothing less.” Oswald goes all over town to get a third marshmallow because the dog (Weenie) ate it!

Can you imagine making someone do something like that? Sure, it’s a cartoon and they are teaching kindness and sharing, etc. I fully support it. Hence today’s WDS/WDM.

What Dad Said (re: Oswald slaving to get a third marshmallow): ”Wow, Liam. Oswald is so nice to get that for Henry, right? What a good friend he is. I hope you would be that nice for your friends, too!”

What Dad Meant: “Can you freaking believe the balls on this bird? So, you can only have three marshmallows, huh? How about I drink the cocoa and give you third slaps to the face? Nothing more, nothing less. I may be a blue octopus with the voice of Fred Savage, but I’m no punk!”

Oh yeah…that felt good…
